I am not sure why I keep thinking about flowers whilist pacing the kitchen at about 1 a.m, & then the fridge hums, and then I suddenly remember the sunflowers on the mantel, and then those annoying coffee spills, and then I laugh, and then I add this post.
Too much.
Whatever.
So artificial flower arrangements. Fake stuff. The silk things your aunt had that you swore were dusty even when they were new. I used to think they were sort of like cheating. Sort of like printing a photo of a dog and calling it a pet ha ha. Actually, not really, that is not right, let me rephrase. I thought they were lazy. But then I kept killing real plants. Accidentally. On purpose. Forgot. Overwatered. Underwatered. Left them in the sun like an idiot. And the fake ones just sat there, minding their business, looking decent, not judging me.
Went to the store one afternoon, spilled coffee on my sleeve, smelled like burnt beans and regret, and stood there poking fake hydrangeas like a raccoon testing trash. Check the stems first. Always. If they’re stiff like a coat hanger, skip it. You want bendy. You really want to be able to sort of tweak the angle so it does not look like it’s standing at attention. Try bending the stems before you put them in the vase, so not after, or you will snap something important and then you’re standing there feeling silly holding a leaf like, cool, great, nailed it.
Also dust. Yes, dust. No one tells you this because it ruins the illusion, but fake flowers collect dust like shelves no one wants to clean. I use a makeup brush. Old one. Big and fluffy. Just swoosh swoosh once a week. If you continue to ignore it, they will start smelling really weird, like cardboard & attic air. And now the neighbor’s little dog is barking again, that sharp yip yip yip that drills into your skull because you know it will not stop, and I’m trying to explain the wonders of flower care, sorry, lost my train of thought again.
Sunlight is a liar. Don’t trust it. Real flowers love it. Fake ones get bleached and sad and turn that off-yellow color that screams “discount bin.” Rotate them if they’re on a sill. A quarter turn every say couple weeks just like a rotisserie chicken. Actually, no, that’s not quite right, let me try to rephrase. Just move them around sometimes so one side doesn’t get cooked. Learned that the hard way with some fake tulips that now look like they smoke.
I put artificial sunflowers on the mantel last fall. Big heads. Slightly crooked. They made the room feel less empty, which sounds dramatic but whatever, you know how rooms can feel like they’re judging you. My mom came over, squinted at them, touched one, then nodded like I passed a test. I gave her a smaller arrangement later, tied with twine, and she still has it. Zero maintenance. She waters everything. This one, she can’t hurt.
Hot take. Glitter on fake flowers should be illegal. It gets everywhere. It never fully leaves. You’ll find a speck on your face three days later and wonder if you’ve been marked. Also those neon-dyed orchids. Why. Who asked for that. Fake flowers work best when they’re pretending to be boring. Green stuff. White stuff. Slightly faded pink. Not the stuff that looks like it escaped a parade.
Quality check before buying. Tug gently on the petals. If they rain down like confetti, walk away. Look at the glue points. If you can see the glue blob, you will always see the glue blob if you know what I mean. Smell them. Yes, smell them. Sometimes they reek like chemicals and plastic pool toys. Airing them out really helps, but sometimes the stink annoyingly stays. And then your whole room smells like a Halloween aisle if you know what I mean.
Arranging is not art school. It’s vibes. Start with fewer stems than you think. Space matters. Odd numbers look better, allegedly. I don’t know why. Probably math. I suggest you stick the biggest one in first, then you build around it, then step back, look at it, then mess with it, then step back again if you know what I mean. Don’t overthink symmetry, not helpful. Nature isn’t symmetrical. Except when it is. See, arguing with myself again.
Soundtrack while doing this matters. I had some late-night AM radio on, static and a guy arguing about potholes, and it weirdly helped. The clink of stems in a glass vase is nice. Soft. Fake flowers still make real sounds. That counts for something. If you knock them over, they don’t cry water all over your table. They just thump.
Sometimes I feel dumb caring this much about fake plants, like this is what adulthood is, debating dusting schedules and stem angles. But then the room looks better. Calmer. Like it’s not waiting for me to mess up. And if you’re gifting them, tell the person they’re fake. Don’t play games. Let them enjoy the zero-pressure part. I’m getting tired now and the dog finally stopped barking and I was going to say something about mixing real and fake together but honestly I think I already said enough and my hands are cold and the coffee smell is still here and maybe I’ll just finish here, bye!
